China Danxia

China Danxia is the name given in China to landscapes developed on continental red terrigenous sedimentary beds influenced by endogenous forces (including uplift) and exogenous forces (including weathering and erosion). The inscribed site comprises six areas found in the sub-tropical zone of south-west China, including Chishui in Guizhou Province, Taining in Fujian Province, Langshan Mountain in Hunan Province, Danxia Mountain in Guangdong Province, Longhu Mountain in Jiangxi Province and Jianglang Mountain in Zhejiang Province.

Danxia landform in these six areas are characterized by spectacular red cliffs and a range of erosional landforms, including dramatic natural pillars, towers, ravines, valleys and waterfalls. These rugged landscapes have helped to conserve sub-tropical broad-leaved evergreen forests, and host many species of flora and fauna, about 400 of which are considered rare or threatened.

Tips:

1. Mount Langshan in Hunan

Mount Langshan is located between Xinning County of Hunan Province and Ziyuan County of Guangxi Zhang Autonomous region. An average annual temperature is 62.6F. 

Best season for visiting:from April to October.

Local snacks and specialties: Zijiang Fish, Tianma, Bamboo Shoot, Honeysuckle, Gaoshan Corn, Luohanguo, etc.

Admission: RMB 66/person

How to get there:

There are long-distance buses to Shimen County in Changsha Western Station, which starts at 8:50,9:20, 10:30, 12:50 ,14:20,15:00 15:30,20:00 or 22:20. There are trains going to Shimen county at the Changsha Railway Station.

2. Danxia Mountain in Guangdong

Accommodation: Hotels can be found at the foot of the hill. But for watching the sunrise it is obviously better to stay overnight somewhere on the mountain top or on the mountainside.

Admission: RMB 100; RMB120 (on holidays and weekends)

How to get there: Take a bus (40 minutes) from the Shaoguan railway station to Danxia Shan Scenic Area.

3. Taining Danxia Landform in Fujian

Taining's local food is a little bit salty and spicy and is characterized by river fish, domestic fungus, bamboo shoot, Youjiang bean curd and various edible wild herbs. Distinct flavor snacks can be represented by Green Roll, Zhuangyuan Ci, Nuangu Bun, Xiancao Cake, Bean Jelly, Lei Tea, etc. During the summer and autumn nights, there are many special Night Teas serviced by the riverside of the city. It really deserves to go there to enjoy the tea with the lovely night scenery and mild wind.

Main native products of Taining are various edible wild mushrooms, delicious fish, dried bamboo shoot, lotus seed, ganoderma lucidum, Hushang Yan Tea, bine tea, watery wine, etc. The handicrafts are mainly wood- or bamboo-produced artwork. The shopping areas are in Shangshu Lane, Zhuangyuan Street as well as many shops spread in each scenic spot. You don’t need to worry about the deal as the Taining’s people are honest and prices are fair.

How to get there:

At present there are three airports near Taining, Nanchang, Wuyishang and Fuzhou, and it takes 2.5 hours, 3 hours and 3.5 hours respectively to arrive at Taining by car.

4. Chishui Danxia Landform

Best season for visiting: Anytime especially from May to october.

In July and August, Chishui is very torridity.

In Spring and Summer, you had better take long sleeves shirts and some medicine because of many mosquitos in bamboo forest.

Please take raincoat or umbrella, sunbonnet, sunglass, and suntan oil in summer.

Suggest taking by boat on Chishui River from city to Bin'an Town.

How to get there:

Chishui is located at the northwest part of Guizhou Province, the lower-middle reaches of Chishui River, and borders Xishui County of Guizhou Province in the southeast and Gulin, Xuyong and Hejiang of Sichuan Province in the northwest. The city is 300 kilometers from Zunyi City, 450 kilometers (280 miles) from the Guiyang, 240 kilometers (149 miles) from the Chongqing, 350 kilometers (217.5 miles) from the Chengdu, and 70 kilometers (37.8 miles) from the Luzhou.

5. Jianglangshan in Zhejiang

Jianglangshan scenic spot is famous for its grand stones with the shape the unique Danxia peak, the narrowest pass, the natural grand peak, the steep Langfei peak, the ancient Kaiming temple, the Jianglang college, the largest stone carving of Chairman Mao’s handwriting on the cliff, Yanxia pavilion, etc.

Admission: RMB 60

How to get there:

Get there by taking a bus to Jiangliang town at Jiangshan bus station. It takes less than one hour, for RMB 4.5. If need go to the hill by bus, add additional RMB 2.

6. Mountain Longhushan in Jiangxi

Best season for visiting: As Longhu Mountain is focused on water visiting, the most suitable period is from April throughout October. However, anytime is suitable for land visiting. Appreciating the green landscapes in spring, enjoying the cool in summer, watching the golden fields in autumn, and admiring wintry scenes in winter, all these are quite attractive and enchanting.

Notice: peak season is the period from March 2006 to November 2006; slack season is the period from December 2006 to February 2007.

How to get there:

Longhu Shan is located outside the city of Yingtan in Jiangxi province and is served by two express trains a day from Shanghai South (4.5 hours). A bus runs from in front of the train station to directly to Longhu Shan.
