Mogao Grottoes

·1900: Taoist Wang Yuanlu discovered the Mogao Grottoes by accident. Wang stumbled into one of the 492 caves at Mogao Grottoes that contained more than 50,000 sutras, records, and paintings covering a period from the 4th to the 11th centuries. It was one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.
