The 7th Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Summit (ACMECS 7) and the 8th Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam Summit (CLMV 8) opened in the Veitnamese capital on Wednesday.

The summits were attended by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw, and Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Somkid Jatusripitak.

During the summits, participants in the Mekong region were expected to discuss a new development environment and adopt cooperative measures to build an economic zone of dynamism, competitiveness, sustainable development and inclusiveness, said Vietnamese Prime Minister Phuc at the opening ceremony.

Pointing out challenges faced by regional countries in their development efforts, Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw called on countries to strengthen cooperation as it is a key element to address changes at the global level.

Meanwhile, UN representative highlighted the bright outlook for the Mekong region, with economic growth ranging between 6-8.5 percent this year which is also supported by foreign investment.

Suggesting solutions for cooperation between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the CLMV and ACMECS frameworks, ADB representative said it is willing to support regional countries to narrow the gap in infrastructure development, invest in soft infrastructure, facilitate transport and trade, and build energy and information technology markets. The ADB will also work with the CLMV and ACMECS nations to create public commodities, fight diseases and respond to climate change.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Phuc told a press conference that the summits brought about new strong platforms in green, inclusive growth, builting people-centered society, and prompt response to climate change.

Meanwhile, measures on mobilizing development resources, tapping growth potential of the Mekong region as well as concrete projects to connect ACMECS and CLMV, application of digital economy into tourism, organic agriculture and information technology were also agreed on among participants at the summits, said Phuc.
