China has condemned the murder of a Chinese national in Pakistan, and urged the Pakistani government to take measures to ensure the safety of local Chinese people.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang says China strongly condemns attacks against Chinese nationals, and will closely monitor the situation as it develops and offer its best assistance to the bereaved family to deal with follow-up affairs.

The spokesman has also urged the Pakistani government to take further measures to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals living in Pakistan.

"We have noted that the Pakistani government and military have taken a series of efforts to better combat terrorism and make society safer. We support the Pakistani side in moving ahead with the relevant measures to ensure its domestic security and stability. Meanwhile, we hope and believe that the Pakistani side will take further measures to ensure the safety of Chinese institutions and personnel in Pakistan."

Local media cited police as reporting that the deceased stopped his car near a grocery shop when he was on his way home after lunch.

His friend left the car to buy vegetables, before some unknown gunmen appeared and sprayed bullets at the vehicle.

A local passerby was also injured in the attack.

No group or person has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
