The Chinese Consulate General in Chicago confirmed on Monday the death of a Chinese student from Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) as a car struck him.

According to Police Department in Wilmington of North Carolina, the 19-year-old Zhao Zishan who spent his vacation there, was hit by a vehicle when he attempted to cross the street where there was no crosswalk.

Jennifer Dandron, a spokesperson with the Wilmington Police Department, said Zhao was hit and killed in the 5600 block of Oleander Drive around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night.

Dandron said Zhao was taken to local medical center and died from injuries a few hours later. She also confirmed no charges will be filed in this fatality.

The Chinese Consulate General was informed by the police and immediately activated the emergency response mechanism, Chinese Deputy Consul General in Chicago Liu Jun said.

Liu said they've contacted parents of the victim and WashU, and let them know that the Chinese Consulate General will offer help needed.

Liu also warned Chinese students studying abroad pay much attention to personal safety, especially during summer vacation.
