The 2018 China AEC Industry Summit was held on June 28-30 in Xi'an city, Shaanxi province. The 9th meeting of its kind focuses on digital construction and industrial upgrading. Thousands of officials, experts and representatives at home and abroad gathered in the historical city to share their wisdom on architectural, engineering, and construction in future.

Billy Anthony Lie, president of Ikatan Quantity Surveyor Indonesia (IQSI), and Krishna Suryanto Pribadi, vice president of Lembaga Pengembangan Jasa Konstruksi (LPJK), look forward to closer cooperation between Indonesia and China.

They both thought that there is more room to explore in the county's construction industry. However, on one hand, the sector is still at its initial phase due to the lack of skilled talents, market transparency and government encouragement.

On the other hand, other factors make it slow to explore the potential market in Indonesia, such as the limited purchasing power of consumers, lending pressure on financial institutions and complexity of land purchase.

They said that with the further development of the Belt and Road Initiative, there must be more chances for frequent and effective cooperation between the two countries.

Lee Chuan Seng, Chairman of Integrated Digital Delivery (IDD) Steering Committee of Building & Construction Authority from Singapore, believed that the construction industry in Singapore is currently implementing one industrial transformation roadmap including three main thrusts: green building, design for manufacturing and assembly, and integrated digital delivery.

He said, "To a certain extent, Singapore's construction industry is facing the same issues as other countries in the world. There is an urgent need to decelerate or prevent climate change, and buildings are making important contributions to world energy consumption and carbon emissions."

In his mind, because the productivity growth of the construction industry lags behind the general economy and is far lower than the manufacturing industry, they are trying to take advantage of the greater manufacturing productivity to increase the productivity of the construction industry by shifting more work from construction sites to factory manufacturing.

Le Van Cu, director of Institute of Construction Economics under Vietnamese Ministry of Construction, spoke highly of the Belt and Road Initiative.

After understanding and learning China's Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology and its application in construction project planning and works, according to him, the Vietnamese government decided to introduce related technology from China for boosting Ho Chin Minh City.

"Now, BIM technology advances in Ho Chin Minh City. For example, construction drawings can be transferred across the borders of China and Vietnam despite of the physical distance between the two countries, promoting information exchange," he said.

Azman bin Ibrahim, under secretary of Policy and International Division, Ministry of Works of Malaysia, said that Malaysia is designing a blueprint called "Smart City."

He compared the city to the human body vividly. "Like the muscles, the buildings serve as the basic strutting units of the city; like the lungs, the urban parks purify the city; like the blood vessels, the roads transport the city nutrients in all directions; and like the five senses, the urban sensors use high-tech means to achieve information collection and feedback," said he.

According to him, Malaysia is also planning a smart transportation system to use big data to improve the convenience and efficiency of transportation system and traffic system.
