A police officer and two revellers were stabbed by a man wielding a knife at Victoria Railway Station in Manchester on New Year's Eve.

The incident took place on a train platform at the station to the north of the city center just before 2100 GMT.

One police officer was stabbed in the shoulder. A man and a woman in their 50s had injuries to the gut and stomach respectively and were taken to hospital, British Transport Police said.

The victims' injuries were serious, but not life-threatening, the police added.

Terrified passengers said they heard a "blood curdling scream" down the platform before running down the tram tracks and seeing a man wielding a long kitchen knife.

The knifeman was arrested at the scene following the attack.

British counter terror cops said they are probing the incident and are keeping an open mind on the motive.

A bulletin posted on the National Rail website said there would be no arrival or departure of trains at the station until 0030 GMT on Tuesday.

The New Year's Eve firework display in Manchester's Albert Square went ahead with security boosted after the incident.

"The fireworks in Albert Square are going ahead despite the incident at Victoria station. There will be increased security. Have a safe and happy New Year," tweeted Manchester city council.
