A man was taken into custody Wednesday night after trying to bring gasoline into St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, local authorities said.
The 37-year-old man from the U.S. state of New Jersey walked into the cathedral on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan with two gas canisters at around 9 p.m. (0200 GMT on Thursday), but was stopped at the entrance by securities, according to the New York Police Department.
Police have surrounded the cathedral and investigation is underway as to the man's intentions and whether he is emotionally disturbed.
The incident comes just two days after a fire devastated the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
Built in 1878 and located in the most prosperous part of New York, St. Patrick's Cathedral attracts millions of visitors from across the world every year. It is equipped with a water-mist system and its wooden ceiling is fire retardant-coated.
