The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday that the recent attack on a reception center for illegal immigrants to the east of Libya's capital Tripoli has killed 53 and injured more than 130.

"The casualties of this week's attack on a migrant center in Tajoura are 53 dead and 130 injured, making the overall toll of the Tripoli conflict nearly 1,000 dead and more than 5,000 wounded," WHO tweeted.

"WHO urges a rapid and peaceful solution so that all people in Libya are safe from harm," it added.

The government accused the rival east-based army of carrying out the attack, while the army strongly denied the claim, saying the government was behind it.

The army has been leading a military campaign to take over the capital from the government since early April, which killed and injured hundreds of people.

Migrant shelters in Libya are crowded with thousands of people who have been rescued at sea or arrested by Libyan security services.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political instability ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
