U.S. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump on Monday paid their respect to the late Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.

Stevens, who died last week following a stroke at the age of 99, is lying in repose in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court.

The president and first lady bowed their heads in silence for a minute before Stevens' flag-draped casket and then walked to view a portrait of the late justice before leaving without making public remarks.

Stevens served as an associate justice of the nation's Supreme Court from 1975 until his voluntary retirement in 2010.

In his court career, Stevens wrote some 400 majority opinions and was seen as one of its leading liberals, though he disagreed with that categorization, arguing that he was conservative but the Supreme Court had moved further to the right during his tenure.

Stevens' body will remain in the Great Hall through Monday for public viewing.

He will be buried in a private ceremony Tuesday at Arlington National Cemetery.
