77 more illegal Myanmar refugees repatriated from Thailand

A total of 77 more illegal Myanmar refugees have been brought back to homeland from Thailand, according to the Immigration and Population Department Sunday.

The migrant workers were delivered by the Thai authorities through Kawthoung border gate in southern Tanintharyi region on Friday evening.

They were arrested by the Thai authorities because they had no work permits and carried expired border passes.

With healthcare provided, these illegal migrant workers were being sent back to their respective homes, the department said.

According to the department, 488 illegal Myanmar migrants including women and children were handed over by the Thai authorities to Myanmar counterpart between January and March this year.

Most of the migrant workers are from Tanintharyi, Yangon, Bago and Ayayawaddy regions and Mon and Rakhine states.

There are about three million young Myanmar workers out of five million currently working in Thailand and most of the marine workers worked in fishing industry constituting a number of 45,000 being employed in the sector and over 51,000 in fishery products processing factories, the department said.
