Cruise ship in Albania catches fire, 5 rescued

A tourist cruise ship caught fire on Monday in Karaburun peninsula, southwestern Albania along the Albanian Ionian sea coast, putting at risk the life of the five crew members who jumped into the sea water and were later rescued, Vlora district police said in a statement.

According to the statement, the cruise ship known as Aquamarine was anchored near Saint Vasil coastal area in Karaburun peninsula due to the bad weather conditions during the weekend.

"In the early hours of Monday, the ship burst into flames risking the life of the five crew members who were on board at the moment of the incident. Immediately after the notification, the naval Border Police came to the aid of the five crew members who jumped into the water after the ship caught fire," read the statement.

The five rescued people are in good health conditions, said the police, adding that the fire left the cruise ship completely burnt.

The police said an investigative team is carrying out further actions regarding the clarification of the circumstances and the disclosure of the causes of the fire.

Aquamarine cruise ship offered daily sailings for tourists across the Albanian Karaburun-Sazan National Marine Park coastline.
