A Maldives criminal court on Tuesday remanded former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb for 15 days over charges of fleeing the country under a travel ban, local media reported.

Adeeb was brought back to the Maldives later on Monday following his attempt to flee the country and seek political asylum overseas.

Once brought back to the island country, Adeeb was produced before the criminal court over his attempt to violate the travel ban.

He was then taken to a detention center, police said.

Adeeb is facing allegations of money laundering during his term in the former government and has been banned from travelling overseas till the end of his trial.
