The Finnish police confirmed on Monday that they had detained two people as suspects of gun fire against the police in Porvoo early Sunday.

Two police officers were injured, one seriously, in the gun fire at an industrial area in Porvoo.

The two men were detained after a high speed chase near the town of Tampere late Sunday. One of them is a dual Finnish-Swedish national and the other is Swedish citizen, the police told local media.

In the high profile chase, the suspects again opened fire against the police cars chasing them, but no police officers were injured.

Seppo Kolehmainen, the national police director of Finland, on Monday expressed thanks to the general public for assistance in the chase. Kolehmainen said information about the direction the suspects were driving came from the public.

Violence against the police has doubled in Finland since 2000. The change is part of a wider trend of increased aggression towards civil servants.

Dr. Henri Rikander, who has carried out research at the University of Eastern Finland, told newspaper Helsingin Sanomat that there have been tens of serious cases each year.

He said that while the ordinary "street violence" has declined in Finland, aggression against "people on duty" has increased.

The description "people on duty" includes, besides the police, also fire and rescue service employees and teachers.
