U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has met with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki here on Monday, one day after taking part in the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II.
"We talked about very important topics connected to our current and future cooperation," Duda said at the joint press conference with Pence.
"We spoke about military cooperation, the modernisation of the Polish army, our planned increased spending on military in the coming years," Duda added.
The Polish president said the Polish army would soon buy new helicopters and expressed the hope that experienced American companies would vie for the contracts.
Duda also said that he hoped that a final deal on the expansion of U.S. military presence in Poland would be signed by the end of the year.
He also told media that a big topic between the two sides was energy cooperation, with Poland already importing U.S. LNG (liquefied natural gas) via a terminal in Swinoujscie and working on expanding the capacity of the terminal.
At the joint press conference, Pence spoke about a the issue of visa-free program.
"Poland already reached a situation where it can take part in the visa waiver programme. Once certification of Poland takes place, Poland can join the programme," Pence said.
Initially, U.S. President Donald Trump was scheduled to come to Poland for the World War II commemoration but he cancelled at last minute, quoting the need to be at home to deal with Hurricane Dorian.
