Iraqi PM discusses cooperation with UN, US delegation

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi on Monday held two meetings with the United Nations top envoy to Iraq and the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, discussing cooperation between Iraq, the international organization and the United States.

A statement by his media office said that Abdul Mahdi discussed with Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the special representative of the UN secretary-general for Iraq, "the government's efforts to meet the demands of the demonstrators, especially the electoral law."

The two sides also discussed cooperation between Iraq and the United Nations and efforts to support stability in the country, the statement said, without giving further details.

Also on Monday, Abdul Mahdi met with the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Matthew Tueller and accompanying delegation, and the two sides discussed the development of relations between the two countries and joint cooperation to fight the remains of the Islamic State (IS) group, according to a brief statement by Abdul Mahdi's office.

Abdul Mahdi's meetings came amid demonstration at the Tahrir Square and nearby al-Khalani Square, where thousands of demonstrators are continuing demanding comprehensive reform, fight against corrupt officials, improvement of public services and job opportunities.
