The Taliban outfit has set free the two American and Australian hostages as part of prisoners' swap for three high-level militant group's leaders on Tuesday in Afghanistan, a local media outlet reported.

"Taliban released Kevin King, 63, and Timothy Weeks, 50, the lecturers of American University of Afghanistan," 1TVNews reported.

Meanwhile, the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) in the statement released here has welcomed the news for the release of the former hostages.

"AUAF welcomes the news of the release of our colleagues, Kevin King and Timothy Weeks, who had been held hostage since Aug. 7, 2016," the statement said.

"The AUAF community, our students, faculty and staff, have keenly felt the absence of our two colleagues even as we have continually urged their release over these past three years," the statement of AUAF added.

Earlier in the morning, Afghan media outlets reported that the Afghan government has released three key Taliban prisoners, including Annas Haqqani, for exchange with a kidnapped U.S. professor and an Australian professor.
