The head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said Monday that if the Europeans trigger a mechanism to return all the international sanctions against the Islamic republic, it would be "detrimental" to the Iranian 2015 landmark nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

"The Europeans want to preserve the nuclear deal as it is of security importance to them," Salehi said at a ceremony to launch a secondary circuit of Iran's Arak heavy water plant.

However, "if they reactivate the mechanism, nothing will remain from the JCPOA," he was quoted as saying by official IRNA news agency.

In response to the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA and its subsequent re-imposition of sanctions against the Islamic republic, as well as the Europeans' "sluggishness" in facilitating its banking transactions and oil exports, Iran has moved to drop its commitments to the JCPOA.
