Pickering nuclear power station in the Canadian province of Ontario issued an emergency alert in error Sunday morning, the local power generating authority said.

An "incident" was reported at the station, which applies to people within 10 km of the facility, the provincial government said in a bulletin issued around 7:30 a.m. local time (1230 GMT).

The initial bulletin denied any "abnormal release of radioactivity from the station" and said that people "DO NOT need to take any protective actions at this time."

However, Ontario Power Generation tweeted shortly after the emergency alert that "the alert regarding Pickering Nuclear was sent in error. There is no danger to the public or environment."

The Pickering plant, which started operations in 1971, is located on the shores of Lake Ontario some 50 km east of downtown Toronto, which is home to a population of around 3 million.
