Germany had supported the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) in Libya with 500,000 euros (about 547,400 U.S. dollars), German Ambassador to Libya said Sunday.

"Humanitarian access is essential to reach people in need. Germany granted additional 500,000 euros to UNHAS," Oliver Owcza tweeted.

"UNHAS provides critical support to over 30 organizations, helping them to reach Libyans, refugees and migrants all over the country," the ambassador explained.

Due to the insecurity and chaos after the toppling of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya became a preferred point of departure for many illegal immigrants trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach European shores.

Shelters in Libya are overcrowded with thousands of immigrants rescued at sea or arrested by the Libyan authorities, despite international calls to close those shelters.
