A flag hoisting ceremony to mark Pakistan Day was held at the Embassy of Pakistan in Beijing on Monday. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, this year's ceremony was simple and was only attended by the embassy staff and their families.

The proceedings commenced with a recitation from Holy Quran followed by the hoisting of the national flag by Ambassador Naghmana Alamgir Hashmi. Messages from the Pakistani president and prime minister were also read at the ceremony.

Pakistani President Arif Alvi highlighted the importance of March 23 in the nation's history as the day when Muslims of South Asia resolved to create a separate homeland under the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

The president urged the nation to remain united in the face of the COVID-19 threat and asked all segments of society to play their role in controlling the spread of the pandemic.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said history had validated the vision of Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Iqbal for the creation of Pakistan as a separate country where Muslims could live in accordance with their beliefs, traditions and culture.

The prime minister also lauded the resolve of the Pakistani nation against the ordeals in the past and urged all citizens to show utmost unity, discipline and passion to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Ambassador Naghmana Alamgir Hashmi said in her address that March 23 was a milestone in the history of Pakistan defining its destiny. She urged everyone to draw inspiration from this day and renew the same spirit of commitment shown in the past.

She lauded the resolve of Pakistani students in China, especially in Hubei province for facing the difficult time of COVID-19 and urged upon them to share their experience in China to fight the pandemic with the people at home.

The ambassador reiterated the resolve of the entire nation to fight the coronavirus pandemic with unity, discipline and determination. She also highlighted the importance of Pakistan-China friendship and said that both countries share the dream of development, peace and security in the region.
