The Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Friday strongly condemned and opposed Britain's interference in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs.
By repeatedly issuing the so-called Six-monthly Report on Hong Kong, Britain has blatantly meddled in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs, seriously trampling on the principles of international law and basic norms governing international relations, the spokesperson of the office said in a statement.
As Britain always invoked the Sino-British Joint Declaration to justify its interference, the spokesperson said the document concerns China's recovery of Hong Kong and relevant arrangements during the transitional period and does not assign Britain any responsibility over Hong Kong after the handover.
With the return of Hong Kong in 1997 and the completion of follow-up matters, all Britain-related provisions have been fulfilled and Britain has no sovereignty, jurisdiction or "right of supervision" over Hong Kong, the spokesperson said, stressing that foreign countries, including Britain, have no right to meddle in Hong Kong affairs on the grounds of the joint declaration.
