Israel said on Wednesday that its new F-35 squadron has completed a joint exercise with the U.S. air forces.

The so-called "Enduring Lightning 3" exercise took place in southern Israel, an Israeli army military spokesperson said in a statement, adding that the exercise was conducted in a special format due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

"The advanced aircraft trained to deal with various strategic aerial and ground threats present in the Middle East," according to the statement.

In the exercise, Israel's 116th Squadron, which is composed of Israeli-amended F-35i fighter jets and became operational this August, trained alongside the 421st Squadron of the U.S. Air Force, operating F-35A fighter jets.

U.S. refueling planes also participated in the drill, in addition to Israel's Red Squadron, which specializes in "enemy simulation." The task of the Red Squadron was "to train and challenge the participating pilots with various scenarios that reflect the operational battlefield," the spokesperson said.

It was the third joint "Enduring Lightning" exercise that took place in Israel over the past year.
