The death toll in India's central state of Madhya Pradesh due to consumption of illicit liquor rose to 11, confirmed a local government official on Thursday.
The deaths took place in the state's Ujjain district. Most of those who died were poor labourers.
Initially the deaths were described as mysterious.
Media reports quoted the senior local administration official Asheesh Singh as saying that the victims began reporting at various government hospitals after their health began to deteriorate from Wednesday evening onwards.
The district administration is trying to ascertain if there is a racket working behind supplying the cheap liquor, he added.
