Two people were killed in an explosion in west London on Wednesday, local fire brigade confirmed.

The explosion, believed to have been caused by gas, took place in a hair salon and mobile phone shop on King Street, Southall, just after 06:30 BST (0530 GMT).

"We can confirm that sadly two people have died at the scene," Station Commander Paul Morgan said.

"Our crews continue to search the property using specialist equipment including the use of urban search-and-rescue dogs," Morgan said.

"It has been a painstaking and protracted incident with firefighters working systematically to stabilize the building and search for people involved," Morgan added.

Local fire brigade said six fire engines and about 40 firefighters had been in attendance and four adults and a child have been rescued so far.
