China, Japan should enhance cooperation: Ambassadors

The Chinese Ambassador to Japan and his Japanese counterpart in Beijing called for the strengthening of bilateral cooperation during the closing ceremony of the 16th Beijing-Tokyo Forum on Tuesday.
Chinese Ambassador to Japan Kong Xuanyou underscored the necessity of peace, development and collaboration in a world being ravaged by COVID-19.
"The 'black swan' event of the COVID-19 epidemic has not only crippled people's health and public health systems around the world, but also accelerated changes unseen in a century," said Kong, adding that "a community with a shared future for mankind is the only way to rise to the challenges in fighting against the epidemic and boosting economic recovery."
Kong urged the two countries to work together to contain the epidemic, especially in the fields of vaccine development and distribution.
While emphasizing the importance of openness and inclusiveness, Kong hailed the signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) as important progress in advancing regional economic integration.
"The two sides should ride the momentum created and speed up negotiations on a China-Japan-ROK free trade agreement," Kong added.
Since China and Japan have both made their carbon neutrality pledges, Kong said the two countries should shoulder due responsibility to jointly tackle climate change and protect the ecological environment.
Japanese Ambassador to China Hideo Tarumi first appreciated the convening of the forum for 16 consecutive years without interruption even by the unprecedented epidemic.
With the forthcoming delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and the 50th anniversary of the normalization of China-Japan diplomatic ties on the horizon, Tarumi hoped the two sides could use these opportunities to enhance cooperation so as to further advance bilateral relations.
"I think the two peoples should overcome misunderstandings and emotional barriers, and take stock of each other's actual situation in a humble manner to carry out more exchanges at different levels," he said.
"What's important is to build a stable and constructive bilateral relationship that is not disturbed by the external environment," Tarumi stressed.
