Bulgarian Vice President Iliana Iotova has tested positive for COVID-19, the press office of the Presidency said Wednesday.

"The Vice President is in good general condition with mild symptoms," the press office said.

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, whose last contact with Iotova was on Jan. 20, has tested negative, the press office noted.

The necessary measures have been taken for disinfection of the working premises and for the normal functioning of the presidential institution, it added.

To date, Bulgaria has confirmed 216,416 COVID-19 cases and 8,916 deaths.

As the world is struggling to contain the pandemic, vaccination is underway in some countries with the already-authorized coronavirus vaccines, but only 29,122 people have so far received COVID-19 vaccines in the Balkan country.

Meanwhile, 236 candidate vaccines are still being developed worldwide -- 63 of them in clinical trials -- in countries including Germany, China, Russia, Britain and the United States, according to information released by the World Health Organization on Jan. 26.
