Djibouti's incumbent president Ismail Omar Guelleh was re-elected, according to the provisional results released on Saturday. This was the fifth time that Guelleh was elected as president.

The provisional results showed Guelleh to have won over 98 percent of the vote, state-broadcaster Radio Television of Djibouti (RTD) reported, quoting the country's Interior Minister Moumin Ahmed Cheick.

Voters went to the polls on Friday, which lasted until 7:00 p.m. local time as counting proceeded soon after. Confirmed results would be released by the Constitutional Council several days later.

Guelleh, 73, contested with his opponent Zakaria Ismail Farah in this year's presidential elections, in which more than 200,000 Djiboutians had registered to vote.

Djibouti, a country located in the Horn of Africa, serves as a major hub for international commerce as well as a key partner in the fight against sea piracy and transnational terrorism.
