Former president and prime minister of Timor-Leste Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão received his first shot of Chinese Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine in the country's capital Dili Thursday.

After getting his jab, Xanana Gusmão, aged 75, who is also the president of the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT), called on all communities across the country to get vaccinated.

He said that considering the raging COVID-19 pandemic across the world, all the people in the country must take the pandemic seriously and should not rely solely on the efforts of medical workers.

The country's Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak thanked the former president for setting an example for the public to support the country's vaccination program.

China recently donated Sinovac COVID-19 vaccines to Timor-Leste, which launched the inoculation campaign on June 14.
