India's Defense Ministry on Wednesday approved procurement of new helicopters, guided munition and rocket ammunition worth 131.65 billion Indian Rupees (1.77 billion U.S. dollars) for the armed forces.

The ministry's Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) approved the procurement proposals for modernization and operational needs of the Indian armed forces at a meeting in New Delhi chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

The approved procurement involves the buying of 25 ALH Mark III helicopters as well as indigenously designed terminally guided munition (TGM), according to a ministry statement.

Nearly 87 percent of the procurement worth 114.86 million Indian Rupees (1.55 billion U.S. dollars) will be from the domestic sources, the ministry said in the statement.
