Forum held on building global community with shared future

An international forum was held on Nov. 30 to discuss the concept of building a global community with a shared future. Participants explored new theoretical paradigms underpinning international relations and international communication through the exchange and cooperation of global think tanks.

The forum, called Building a Community with Shared Future International Think Tank Forum 2021, provided an interdisciplinary platform for famous experts and scholars in international relations, world development, and communication. The forum's theme was "Common Values and the Direction of the Global Development." In addition, participants shared views on the theoretical research on building a global community with a shared future and international communication strategies. The Institute for a Community with Shared Future (ICSF), Communication University of China (CUC), hosted the forum.

The forum began with an award and launch ceremony for the International Research Centers for a Community with Shared Future. Liao Xiangzhong, president of CUC, and Duan Peng, vice president of CUC, attended the awards ceremony for the Outstanding Contribution Award and the Excellence Award of International Research Center.

New research centers in Argentina, Spain, Venezuela, and Georgia were also launched.         

The awards ceremony was followed by three sessions of panel discussions, where speakers reflected on the milestones of the research centers and shared their thoughts on building a global community with a shared future.


Yu Hongjun, vice president of the Chinese People's Association for Peace and Disarmament and former vice-minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, discussed how the CUC managed to mobilize resources to develop the Institute of Community with Shared Future. 

He noted how they started with only seven research centers and have added more by launching the new center during the forum. Yu further underscored the importance of cooperation in health, peace, and development.

Koh King Kee, director of the ASEAN Research Center for a Community with Shared Future and president of the Centre for New Inclusive Asia, Malaysia, shared views on the global community with a shared future and applauded the CUC management for the great strides made in promoting this concept. 

"A Community with Shared Future is China's vision for a fair, equitable, and just global order built upon the spirit of openness, inclusiveness, mutual respect, and love for mother earth. It is China's concept of global governance. It underlies China's strategic thoughts on the long-term development of its bilateral ties with other countries, and manifests China's foreign policy goal of peace, equality, development and win-win cooperation," he said.

Jean-Christophe Bas, the Director of the European Research Center for a Community with Shared Future and Founder and CEO of Connecters for Peace, emphasized the importance of working together, especially during the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

He stressed the need to combat polarization, strengthen unity through culture, and instill trust by opening up for more cooperation and collaborative efforts to improve communication channels.

Clifford Kiracofe, president of the Washington Institute for Peace and Development, pointed out that the time has come for think tanks to adapt in pursuit of peace and development, citing the increasing world tensions that have affected the Asia-Pacific. 

"To build a Community with a Shared Future, we must take an inclusive approach and adhere to the shared values of humanity. Furthermore, sincere proponents of peace and development must reject militarism and various forms of imperialism," he said. 

Kiracofe further reaffirmed the notion of building a Community with a Shared Future through a renewed commitment to the United Nations aimed at constructing renewal to multilateral diplomacy, international law, and international organization.

Li Huailiang, dean of ICSF of CUC, stressed promoting shared values and avoiding strategic misjudgments. He cited China-U.S. relations as an example to illustrate how an oppositional mentality can lead to serious strategic miscalculations. 

During China's economic development and the improvement of its people's livelihoods, the country has shown growing confidence in its path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics. He emphasized that it has demonstrated to the world an alternative model and has proved many U.S. politicians wrong.
