China-France dialogue held to promote cultural exchange

A dialogue was held in Paris on May 1 to promote exchange and mutual learning between civilizations, drawing over 60 experts and scholars from the political, business, academic, and cultural fields of China and France.

The dialogue came as China and France celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. It was also a supplementary event organized by China International Communications Group (CICG) while participating in the Foire de Paris 2024.

Yu Yunquan, vice president of CICG and president of CICG's Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. He emphasized the importance of preserving traditions while fostering innovation to strengthen cultural and people-to-people exchange between China and France. He called for using new technologies including artificial intelligence and virtual reality to facilitate cooperation in fields such as publication, artifacts, and arts in order to open up new horizons for China-France exchange.

Valérie Terranova, a special advisor to former French President Jacques Chirac, said that as the world grapples with crises brought by geopolitics, climate change, and trust deficit, different civilizations should carry out exchange and dialogue to address those crises. She added that Europe should promote cultural and people-to-people exchange so as to make concrete contributions to addressing common challenges and advancing the progress of human society.

Marie Deketelaere-Hanna, general in spector of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion of France, said that amid more and more global crises and challenges, strengthening cultural exchange between China and France will help promote collaborative efforts between China and Europe to make a positive contribution to global development. She added that China and France should proactively use innovative technologies to build a network for dialogue and cooperation among civilizations.

After the opening addresses, officials from several Chinese provinces and cities as well as executives from the cultural sector introduced their cultural exchange projects with France. Two panel discussions were later held on the themes of modernization, common development, cross-cultural communication, and integration of culture and tourism.
