Waves up to 90 centimeters of the tsunami triggered by the powerful earthquake in Chile hit Kuji port in Japan's northeast Iwate Prefecture at around 3: 09 p.m.( 0609 GMT) Sunday, the highest among the initial waves observed in the country.

The waves first hit a small island of Ogasawara islands 1,950 km south of Tokyo, public broadcaster NHK reported early afternoon. But the waves are much smaller than predicted.

The weather agency of Japan has warned waves up to 3 meters could reach the Pacific coasts, triggering massive evacuation across the country.
