Since 1999, the Information office of the State Council of China has organized a series of cultural events in several countries, including Germany, France, Switzerland, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, South Korea, South Africa, Israel and Turkey. Collectively named "Experience China," the events have been well received by overseas governments, news media and the general public. They have become an established part of China’s cultural exchange program, and provide a way for foreign audiences to understand and experience China in their own countries.

The year 2011 is the 20th anniversary of dialogue between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). "Experience China" is a series of acritivities held throughout Indonesia to commemorate this event.

The "Experience China" events will give Indonesians a chance to get to know the real China in an all-round way, through lectures, performances, films and other cultural activities. The activities will highlight the Chinese people's friendship towards the Indonesian people and provide an opportunity for the people of the two countries to communicate with each other face to face.

Experience China in Indonesia is co-sponsored by the SCIO, China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, the Chinese People's Institute for Foreign Affairs, the Chinese Embassy to Indonesia, the Chinese Consulate-General in Surabaya, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the ASEAN Secretariat.
