"We hope to enhance cooperation with China in tourism and attract more Chinese to come visit our province," said Sunarmaji, an official with the East Java Government Cultural and Tourism Service. He made the remarks in Surabaya when meeting with a Chinese media delegation and two journalists from Indonesian Chinese language media.

In 2010, China ranked East Java's third tourism source. A total of 158,000 tourists visited East Java that year, and 11,032 were Chinese.

East Java has a population of 37.5 million, and its capital, Surabaya, is the second-largest city in the country.

Sunarmaji also expressed his hope that Chinese businesses will invest in East Java. "East Java has three Chinese sister provinces: Tianjin, Shandong and Zhejiang," he said.

East Java has been making efforts to increase direct flights from Chinese cities to East Java in an attempt to bring more Chinese tourists to East Java, he said. The East Java governor recently signed a deal with Chinese officials to push forward a direct flight from Shanghai to East Java.
