China will continue to support UN peacekeeping missions and assist reconstruction efforts in Haiti, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Thursday.

Meeting Ban on the sidelines of the international conference on Afghanistan in London, Yang said China has cooperated closely with the United Nations during the past year and will continue to play a responsible and constructive role in various UN missions.

Ban spoke highly of China's contributions to the relief efforts in Haiti, saying the country has provided powerful support and generous assistance to the quake-torn nation, and he was impressed by Chinese rescue workers' bravery and devotion.

Ban said China has played an important role in addressing major international and regional matters, citing its contributions to the UN Millennium Development Goals, climate change, the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, and reconstruction in Afghanistan.

The United Nations is expected to step up cooperation and strengthen coordination with China, he added.
