Japanese Emperor Akihito on Wednesday expressed hope that as many people as possible will remain safe following Friday's devastating earthquake and quake- triggered tsunami and nuclear crisis.

In a televised public address, the emperor sincerely hoped that the people will overcome the current difficulties and demonstrate solidarity following the disasters.

He also expressed deep concern over the leaks of radioactive substances at the troubled Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant, where blasts and fires broke out after some reactors lost their cooling functions.

The National Police Agency said Wednesday that Friday's catastrophic quake and ensuing tsunami have left 3,771 people dead and 7,843 others unaccounted for in Japan by 2:00 p.m. (0500 GMT) Wednesday.
