6.5-magnitude earthquake hits off east coast of Japan's Honshu

An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted the waters off the east coast of Honshu, Japan, at 6:54 p.m. Beijing Time Tuesday, according to the China Earthquake Network Center.

The epicenter, with a depth of 20 km, was monitored at 37.4 degrees north latitude and 142.4 degrees east longitude, the center said in a statement.
