M 6.1 earthquake hits off Japan's east coast

A magnitude-6.1 earthquake hit off the east coast of Honshu, Japan, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported on its website on Wednesday.

The temblor occurred at 5:57 a.m. local time Thursday (1957 GMT Wednesday), with a depth of 11.2 km. The epicenter was some 537 km northeast of Tokyo, and 190 km east of Morioka, Honshu, said the USGS.

No tsunami warning has so far been issued.
