Algerian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the government allowed members of the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to stay in the country on humanitarian grounds only, Algeria's state-owned radio reported on Tuesday.
Gaddafi's wife Safiya, his daughter Aisha, and sons Hannibal and Mohammed, accompanied by their children, entered Algeria Monday morning through the Algerian-Libyan border, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Aisha gave birth to a baby girl early Tuesday in Algeria after entering Libya's neighboring country, a government source told Xinhua.
Algeria would hand over Muammar Gaddafi to the International Criminal Court if the embattled Libyan leader attempted to enter the North African country, local Arabic-language daily Echorouk quoted well-informed sources as saying Tuesday.
The government made the decision according to the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for Gaddafi, his son Seif al-Islam Gaddafi and intelligence chief Abdullah al- Senussi, the report added.
