Chinese President Hu Jintao had a "positive and constructive" meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington Monday, said Ma Zhaoxu, spokesman of the Chinese delegation.

President Hu had a candid and cordial meeting with President Obama, Ma said while briefing the press.

The two presidents exchanged views on China-U.S. relations and major global and regional issues of shared interest, and reached important agreement, Ma said.

The two sides both believe that a good China-U.S. relationship serves the common interests of the two countries and contributes to world peace, stability and prosperity, said the spokesman.

It is important for the two sides to work together to increase dialogue, enhance mutual trust and expand cooperation and continue to move China-U.S. relations forward, he said.
