Olympic torch relay in Dar es Salaam concludes

The Beijing Olympic torch relay in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, concluded on Sunday afternoon.

The last torchbearer, UN Under-Secretary-General and UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka, ran with the torch in the Tanzanian National Stadium at about 4:00 p.m. (1300 GMT).

She finally lit the ceremonial cauldron in the stadium. Applause thundered to embrace the end of the torch relay in Dar es Salaam. A grand celebration ensued.

Tibaijuka was the first African woman elected by the UN General Assembly as Under-Secretary-General of a United Nations program. Her home town was Dar es Salaam which is dubbed as "harbor of peace".
