The 2005 Global Mobile Congress opens today in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, themed "Open Wireless Architecture (OWA) will dominate the future of mobile communication," said organizers.

"The congress serves as a platform for the research community to share achievements and experimental data, and to discuss future directions in Beyond (B3G) and fourth generation (4G) wireless telecommunications," said Willie W. Lu, founder of Global Mobile Congress Mission Worldwide.

More than 130 delegates from all over the world will attend the three-day congress, co-sponsored by China Institute of Telecommunications and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), including experts, equipment manufacturers and international investors interested in the mobile communication industry, said congress sources.

Discussions are expected to focus on time-division synchronous code-division multiple access (TD-SCDMA) technology, communications networks for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the commercial application of 3G mobile communication technologies.

According to the organizers, there will be special workshops focusing on China's 3G rollout, the Olympics and future Chinese research and development (R&D) programs.

An R&D league of 4G mobile communication technologies is also expected to be set up during the meeting.

The congress, established last year in Shanghai, will be held annually.
