Fenghuang County
Adjust font size:

Meaning "phoenix" in Chinese, Fenghuang is one of the most beautiful ancient towns in China and a popular tourist destination in Hunan Province.

The county is famous for its Huangsiqiao Ancient Town, which was built during the Tang Dynasty (AD618-907), and the Fenghuang Ancient Town, which was built during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

A 190 km-long section of the Great Wall built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) stretches across the county, which borders Hunan and Guizhou.

Home to several ethnic minority groups, such as the Miao and Tujia people, Fenghuang also features many unique charms.

Surrounded by mountains, Fenghuang boasts a picturesque landscape that has inspired many artists and photographers.

Fenghuang was made famous in the works of the writer Shen Congwen (1902-88), who wrote stories and essays about his hometown along the western border of Hunan Province.

Another highly regarded Fenghuang native is Huang Yongyu, whose bold landscapes and delicate flower paintings during the 1980s gained him a considerable following, both at home and abroad.
