Paramount's "A Quiet Place" topped North American box office in its opening weekend with an estimated 50 million U.S. dollars, becoming the second-best three-day debut of 2018 so far behind only Marvel Studios' "Black Panther."

The plot of the horror film follows a family who must live life in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound.

"'A Quiet Place' absolutely went above and beyond opening weekend expectations ringing up a thunderous 50 million dollars debut," wrote movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore in an email to Xinhua.

"The originality of the film and its unique concept drew massive audience interest for the film directed by and starring John Krasinski and featuring a terrific cast including Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe," he added.

The film earned 21 million dollars internationally this weekend, pushing its global cume to 71 million dollars to date.

"A Quiet Place" generated positive results on comScore/Screen Engine's PostTrak audience survey with 4 out of 5 stars and a 60 percent "definite recommend" score. It also earned a "B+" from moviegoers on CinemaScore and a solid 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In second place, Warner Bros.' "Ready Player One" took in an estimated 25.06 million dollars in its second weekend for a North American cume of 96.92 million dollars. Based on Ernest Cline's 2011 Literary Role Playing Game novel of the same name, the science fiction film was produced and directed by Steven Spielberg.

Universal's comedy film "Blockers" opened in third place with an estimated 21.44 million dollars in its first weekend. Directed by Kay Cannon, the film follows the efforts of parents who are trying desperately to stop their daughters from losing virginity on prom night.

Disney and Marvel Studios' "Black Panther" landed in fourth place with an estimated 8.43 million dollars in its eighth weekend, pushing its North American cume to 665.35 million dollars and globe cume to 1,299.9 million dollars to date.

Roadside Attractions' Christian drama film "I Can Only Imagine" finished fifth with an estimated 8.35 million dollars in its fourth weekend.
