Winners of the Tiantan Award 2018 were announced in Beijing on Sunday during the closing event of the annual Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF).

Georgian film director and screenwriter Mariam Khatchvani won the Tiantan Award for Best Director for "Dede," while Best Feature Film went to "Scary Mother."

Meanwhile, British actor Joe Cole won the Best Actor award for "Eye on Juliet," and Georgian actress Nata Murvanidze took Best Actress for her performance in "Scary Mother."

Chinese blockbuster "Operation Red Sea" took the trophy of Best Visual Effects during the award ceremony.

The Tiantan Awards are the most prestigious awards at the festival, which drew 659 entries from 71 countries and regions this year. Fifteen films were in the running for the Tiantan Award, among which five were directed by women.

Moreover, the Best Feature Film award and the Best Director award both went to female filmmakers.

Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai, who chaired the award's voting committee, said he hopes more films will pay attention to women's rights and that more female filmmakers will put stories of women on the big screen.

Earlier on Friday, 38 major cooperation programs between 79 companies were sealed, worth a combined 26.08 billion yuan (US$4.14 billion), 49 percent growth more than the deals at the festival in 2017.

Among the deals, a 4.26 billion yuan investment program in Hangzhou China Film City was initiated by China Film Co., Ltd., aiming to build it into a world-class cultural exchange platform for Chinese and foreign films.

Chinese and Spanish companies also signed an agreement to co-produce five animated films, altogether worth 600 million yuan.

With more cooperation deals brokered in recent years, Chinese film market is expected to take off, and the film industry will be more diversified and prosperous, said Yang Shuo, vice chairman and secretary of the 8th BJIFF organizing committee.
