The son of China's richest man has founded a new film company and held an award ceremony in Shanghai on Thursday to support new  directors because he doesn't want to see "rubbish films."

Wang Sicong, son of Dalian Wanda Group Chairman and China's richest man Wang Jianlin, launched his film startup Banana Pictures in 2015. Industry mainstays such as veteran directors Huang Jianxin, Andrew Lau and Zhang Yibai, producer Peggy Chiao, and actors Bao Jianfeng and Yuan Hong attended last night's gala to show their support for the project.

The junior Wang is an entrepreneur, investor, esports fan and film lover, as well as an online celebrity on China's social networks. He's known for giving his unfiltered opinions on films, and in the past has attacked famous directors Jiang Wen and Feng Xiaogang for some of their films that didn't live up to his standards.

"There are too many rubbish films in the market. I don't want to see them anymore. So I decided to open this company, training and nurturing new directors with the intention of changing the status quo, " Wang said.

The company inaugurated a support program last September to award 100,000 yuan (US$15,700) to 2 million yuan to exceptional new directors, depending on the quality of their short films.
