An award ceremony for China's first National Youth Short-Films Competition was held at Beijing Film Academy, the "cradle of Chinese films," on Monday in Beijing, after which an opening ceremony for the second competition was held the same day.

Voices of the Youth, a social networking platform under the All-China Youth Federation, guided the first National Youth Short-Films Competition, which was co-hosted by the Internet, Film and TV Center of the Communist Youth League and New Oriental Education & Technology Group Inc. The three-month-long competition drew nearly a thousand entries from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China. The entries cover topics such as school life, volunteer work, traditional Chinese culture, rights protection and diverse personalities, all of which reflect the young generation's perspective on the contemporary world.

With the slogan "A better you, a bigger world," the ceremony named winners for 28 awards including best directors, best cinematography, best screenplay and best editing.

Yu Minhong, nicknamed the "Godfather of Studying Abroad," walked the red carpet together with nearly a hundred winners of the National Youth Short-Films Competition at the award ceremony. Yu is the founder and president of New Oriental Education & Technology Group Inc.

Yu showed up at the ceremony to support young people to brand themselves, record the process of growing up, and observe society from their unique perspective.

He revealed ruefully that for the 10 years from his acceptance into Peking University to the time he opened New Oriental, he had only 10 photos of himself.

"Short-films are having a positive effect in helping people grow and propelling social development," he said during the ceremony. "Dear students, you must remember: The memory of adolescence is very precious. You should not neglect recording that period of life just because you are not confident or you feel that no one cares about you," Yu added.

Zhao Yan, the teacher who oversaw the filming of the award-winning short-film "The Summer," spoke highly of the competition.

"The competition has provided a professional platform for student groups and students to have a chance for inter-school communication," Zhao said. "Also, through practice, students who love making films are able to gain a clearer sense of their future job."
