Chinese social networks exploded with activity on Tuesday when internet users heard the breaking showbiz news of actor Feng Shaofeng and actress Zhao Liying announcing their marriage.

The pair posted their marriage registry photo on their separate Sina Weibo accounts at the same time to officially announce the good news on the day also marking Zhao's 31st birthday.

Feng's post was retweeted more than 22,300 times and received more than 47,700 comments and 402,000 likes while Zhao's post was retweeted over 107,000 times and received more than 183,000 comments and 594,000 likes within half-an-hour. Weibo users made 4.5 million searches that came close to paralyzing the microblog platform.

Rumors that the two were in a relationship had been circulating for over a year, but was never acknowledged by them publicly, although they were spotted holding hands on various occasions. Rumors went as far as saying Zhao had become pregnant in September, but this was denied by their respective agents.

It was believed the Feng and Zhao's relationship started when they worked together on the film "The Monkey King 3" back in 2016, an adaptation of a chapter from the classic novel "Journey to the West."

Interestingly, the Buddhist monk Xuanzang (played by Feng) falls in love with the Queen (played by Zhao) of an exotic kingdom inhabited solely by women, but bitterly decides to give up love and continue his journey to collect Buddhist sutras along with his disciples. Now, fact has reversed fiction.
