The publication of rare Chinese classic ancient books helps to promote traditional culture and ensure more people can enjoy the outstanding works of Chinese literature and art, according to Li Zhizhong, director of the National Ancient Books Protection Working Committee, speaking in Beijing on Dec.1.

At a ceremony to launch them on Saturday, Li said the collection involved 102 ancient books kept in libraries nationwide, offering readers an opportunity to feel the original essence of the classics and with the hope of inspiring more people to enjoy traditional Chines culture.

The collection was catalogued into classics, history, masters and collections of belle lettres, featuring one title printed in the Tang Dynasty, 38 from the Song Dynasty, 18 from the Yuan Dynasty, 30 from the Ming Dynasty, and 11 from the Qing Dynasty, spanning a period of around 1,300 years.

It covers various aspects of Chinese feudal society, including politics, the economy, philosophy, history, technology, and so forth.

As a major part of a project to protect Chinese ancient books started by the State Council in 2002, this collection is aimed at restoring and preserving ancient books in a bid to tap the full potential of cultural relics.

"The project plays a big part in the passing down and development of traditional Chinese culture," said Jiang Fengjun, the collection's organizer.

A multimedia approach, including the internet and digital media, will be continue adopted to promote traditional Chinese culture understanding and appreciation among the people, he added.
